Which licence do you need to tow this trailer?
Many customers ask us. The licence you need depends on the trailer's gross weight (its GVW / PTAC) and on the total weight of the combination (car + trailer, loaded). Here is a clear reminder of the French rules to tow safely and legally.
Licence by weight
| Trailer GVW | Combination GVW (car + trailer) | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 750 kg | Any | B |
| 750 – 3,500 kg | ≤ 3,500 kg | B |
| 750 – 3,500 kg | 3,500 – 4,250 kg | B96 |
| 750 – 3,500 kg | > 4,250 kg | BE |
| > 3,500 kg | Any | C1E |
Trailer ≤ 750 kg, or car + trailer combination ≤ 3,500 kg.
Trailer > 750 kg and combination up to 4,250 kg. Requires a 7-hour training (no exam).
Trailer > 750 kg and combination > 4,250 kg.
Trailer with a GVW above 3,500 kg (HGV licence).
Where to read it on the registration document
Unladen weight of the vehicle.
Maximum authorised laden weight: unladen + load.
Maximum authorised train weight: laden vehicle + laden trailer.
What about the PTRA (train weight) limit?
On top of the licence, the whole combination (car + load + trailer + load) must always stay under the GTW (PTRA) shown on the towing vehicle's registration document (field F.3). This limit keeps braking distances safe.
