Choosing the right mini excavator starts with matching the machine to the reality of your sites. Six criteria capture most of the decision: weight, digging depth, access width, engine, compatible attachments and transport. Let's review them, with concrete figures to guide you.

1. The right weight class for your jobs

The operating weight determines digging power and depth. To dig a pool or foundations, a 1.5 to 2.5 tonne machine is enough. For intensive earthworks or road works, go for 3 tonnes or more.

A practical guide based on the work planned:

  • Gardens, light trenches, confined spaces: 800 kg to 1.2 tonnes
  • Deep trenches, light foundations, small pool: 1.5 to 2 tonnes
  • Earthworks, standard pool, utility networks: 2 to 2.5 tonnes
  • Intensive earthworks, large construction sites: 3 to 4 tonnes

Golden rule: it's better to choose a weight class slightly above your immediate needs. An undersized machine constantly works at its limit, wears faster and loses precision. Aim for 15 to 20% headroom over the theoretical minimum weight.

2. Digging depth

The maximum digging depth ranges from 1.5 m (800 kg micro excavator) to over 3.5 m (4 t mini excavator). Define your needs before choosing. A few benchmarks for common jobs:

  • Cables and telecoms networks: 0.40 to 0.60 m — a micro excavator is enough
  • Drinking-water pipes: 0.80 to 1.20 m (up to 1.50 m in colder regions)
  • Drainage: 0.80 to 1.50 m depending on the gradient
  • House foundations: 0.50 to 1.20 m for standard strip footings
  • Standard shell pool: 1.60 to 1.90 m of excavation
  • Geothermal (horizontal collectors): 0.80 to 1.20 m over a large area

The depth in the spec sheet is a theoretical maximum: in practice, take off 10 to 15% to work comfortably. A machine rated at 1.73 m works easily down to 1.50 m.

3. Access width

If you need to get through a gate, path or narrow passage, check the overall width. Micro excavators go down to 75 cm wide. Useful benchmarks:

  • Standard gate: 90 to 100 cm — a 75 cm micro excavator gets through easily
  • Garden path: 100 to 120 cm — most 1.2 to 1.8 tonne machines fit
  • City-centre pedestrian lane: 120 to 150 cm
  • Standard interior doorway: 83 to 93 cm — only the smallest micro excavators fit

On models with a variable track width (expandable undercarriage), the stated width is the retracted position. Extended, stability is at its best but the width gains 20 to 30 cm. Consider both dimensions depending on the work phase.

4. The type of engine

Our mini excavators are fitted with diesel engines (Kubota, Yanmar, Laidong), known for their reliability and endurance. Power (in hp or kW) determines how well the machine works in hard ground and how fast it gets the job done:

  • Under 12 hp (8.8 kW): light work, soft ground, gardening
  • 12 to 20 hp (8.8 to 14.7 kW): a good compromise for most tradespeople's work
  • 20 to 30 hp (14.7 to 22 kW): professional power, all terrain
  • Over 30 hp: intensive use, heavy work, rock

The engine brand is a genuine quality criterion. Kubota and Yanmar engines are benchmarks for reliability and spare-parts availability in France.

5. Compatible attachments

Check the available attachments: digging buckets, hydraulic breaker, auger, grab thumb, quick hitch. A mini excavator's versatility depends largely on its attachments.

The quick hitch is the most important attachment to consider from the outset. It lets you change bucket in 30 seconds without leaving the cab, versus 5 to 10 minutes with a manual fixing. On a varied site, it pays for itself in a single day. Check compatibility with your machine's coupler standard (CW, S, or proprietary).

6. Transport

To transport a mini excavator you need a suitable trailer. With a standard car licence alone, the combined gross weight (car + loaded trailer) must stay under 3,500 kg. Above that, a BE licence or B96 training is required (French rules).

  • Micro excavator 800–995 kg: 1.5 t plant trailer, towable by an SUV or light van (standard licence)
  • Mini excavator 1.2 to 2 t: 2.5 to 3 t trailer, a powerful vehicle + B96 or BE licence
  • Mini excavator 2.5 to 4 t: flatbed truck or heavy trailer, a C or suitable BE licence

Warranty and after-sales: what to check

Warranty and after-sales are often overlooked at purchase, but decisive in the long run. A broken-down machine with no support can cost several thousand euros in lost site time. At CZN Machinery, every machine is covered by a 24-month manufacturer warranty on parts and labour:

  • Technical team in Toulouse, reachable Monday to Friday
  • Nationwide call-outs for warranty repairs
  • Permanent spare-parts stock in France: lead times in days, not weeks
  • Under-warranty failure rate below 3%

Before buying from any seller, ask these questions: who actually provides the after-sales service? Where are the parts stocked? What is the average call-out time?

Checklist: 10 questions before buying

  1. What maximum depth? Define your most demanding use case.
  2. What is the width of the narrowest passage? Gate, path, indoor passage — measure everything.
  3. What is the dominant ground? Soft, clay, stony, rocky — it affects weight class and attachments.
  4. How often will you use it? More than 15 days a year: buying is cheaper than renting.
  5. Need specific features? Variable track width, offset boom, enclosed cab, auxiliary hydraulic outlet.
  6. How will you transport the machine? Suitable licence and vehicle, or delivery included?
  7. What total budget (machine + attachments)? A basic pack costs €1,500 to €3,000.
  8. Which financing suits my tax situation? Cash, credit, lease-to-own or leasing.
  9. Is the warranty serviced in France? Check for local after-sales with parts in stock.
  10. Do I need certification? Professional use = CACES R482 cat. A required (France); private use = none.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing on price alone: the wrong sizing costs more in the long run.
  • Overlooking attachments: budget for them from the start.
  • Ignoring access width: the most common mistake. Measure before ordering.
  • Oversizing needlessly: a 3 t machine uses more fuel, manoeuvres less well in tight spaces and costs more to maintain than a 1.8 t for the same everyday jobs.
  • Underestimating transport costs: factor them into your return calculation.
  • Buying without after-sales in France: a warranty from a supplier with no French presence is meaningless. See our guide on buying a Chinese mini excavator.

Recommendations by profile

Private individual: garden, pool, small jobs

Prioritise ease of use, compactness and price. An 800 kg micro excavator — narrow and intuitive — is the go-to. For more ambitious projects (pool, foundations), step up the digging depth. No certification required on your own land.

Tradesperson: regular use, varied work

The machine must cover 90% of situations in a single unit. A 1.8 tonne with good depth and a contained width goes everywhere, digs deep and works fast. Variable track width is a valuable plus in urban settings.

Construction professional: intensive daily use

Go for a reputable engine brand and suitable power. A 3 t with a Kubota engine is the most reliable choice for daily use. For sites needing an air-conditioned cab and great depth, step up to 4 t.
