A mini dumper — also called a compact dumper or tracked transporter — is a powered machine designed to transport bulk materials over difficult ground. Mounted on rubber tracks, it combines a hydraulic tipping skip and a compact diesel engine (400 to 800 kg).

It's not a digging machine: it's a transport machine, designed to work alongside a mini excavator or mini loader, shuttling between loading and unloading.

How does a mini dumper work?

Transmission and traction

Mechanical 1- or 2-speed transmission. 1st gear (~1.7 km/h) gives maximum traction (loaded climbs, soft ground), 2nd (up to 5 km/h) for empty runs. Steering by track differential using two levers.

Hydraulic skip tipping

The skip lifts via a single-acting cylinder (3 to 5 seconds). Telescopic-skip models reach a tipping height of 1.75 m — enough to load a truck directly.

Diesel engine

Single-cylinder engines of 6.5 to 13.5 hp, air-cooled (simpler maintenance). Consumption: 0.8 to 1.5 L/h.

What is a mini dumper used for?

  • Transporting materials: sand, gravel, cement, blocks, concrete
  • Removing soil and spoil: often alongside a mini excavator
  • Removing rubble: demolition, renovation
  • Landscaping: topsoil, compost, stones
  • Farm work: crops, hay, fertiliser
  • Green spaces: collecting garden waste

Thanks to its tracks, it excels on rough, muddy or sloping ground (up to 20°).

Ground capabilities and limits

Strengths: soft and muddy ground (ground pressure lower than a person's), slopes up to 20° loaded, narrow spaces (870 mm wide, turning < 1 m), short to medium distances (50 to 200 m).

Limitations: top speed 5 km/h (a tipper truck is more efficient beyond 500 m), care with delicate surfaces, and above 20° loaded, stability is no longer guaranteed — reduce the load by 30 to 40% on steep slopes, and never tip at the edge of a bank.

How to choose your mini dumper

  1. Load capacity: 500 to 800 kg (skip 0.15 to 0.22 m³)
  2. Engine power: 6.5 to 13.5 hp (go for 10 hp+ on sloping ground)
  3. Number of gears: 1 (~1.7 km/h) or 2 (1.7 to 5 km/h)
  4. Start type: electric (convenient) or manual (economical)
  5. Dimensions: 870 mm wide, 0.95 m turning

Safety and good practice

  • Never carry people in the skip or on the machine
  • Skip lowered and locked before moving (never with the skip raised)
  • Reduce the load on slopes (> 15°: −30 to 40%)
  • Tipping only on flat, stable ground
  • Communicate with the excavator operator, and stay out of the rotation radius

Basic PPE: safety boots, helmet, gloves.

Mini excavator + mini dumper: the winning pair

The excavator digs and loads the skip; while the dumper hauls, the excavator keeps digging. This continuous cycle eliminates waiting time.

On a pool job (30 m³): a mini excavator alone + wheelbarrows = 2 to 3 days for 2 people; a mini excavator + mini dumper = 1 to 1.5 days. A 40 to 60% saving. Sizing: a 400 mm bucket (0.10 to 0.15 m³) matches a 500 kg dumper; for a 3 t excavator with a large bucket, the MT1000 (800 kg).

Maintenance and lifespan

  • Engine oil change: every 200 h
  • Air filter: check every 50 h
  • Hydraulic level: before each use
  • Track tension: monthly; greasing: every 10 h

Well maintained, a mini dumper lasts 8,000 to 10,000 hours. Wear parts: tracks (2,000 to 3,000 h), cylinder seals (1,500 to 2,000 h). Permanent parts stock at CZN.

Mini dumper vs manual transport

500 kg per trip versus 40–60 kg by wheelbarrow (10 times more). For 20 m³: 2 hours with the dumper vs a full day by wheelbarrow. With an entry price of €3,894 excl. VAT, the investment is recouped in a few jobs.

Mini dumper FAQ

What is the difference from a powered wheelbarrow?

A powered wheelbarrow (1 wheel, 100–200 kg) is pushed by the operator. A mini dumper is self-propelled on tracks (500 to 800 kg, hydraulic skip), carries 3 to 5 times more and handles difficult ground.

Can it be driven on public roads?

No, these are site machines with no road approval. Transport on a plant trailer between sites.

What capacity for a 2 tonne mini excavator?

A 400–500 mm bucket moves 0.12 to 0.18 m³: a 500 kg dumper is right. For a 3 t excavator or a large bucket, the MT1000 (800 kg).

Is it hard to operate?

No, 15 to 30 minutes is enough. Two track levers and a skip lever. Training included on delivery.
