Regular maintenance is essential to maximise your mini excavator's lifespan and avoid costly breakdowns. A well-maintained machine lasts 8,000 to 12,000 hours — 15 to 20 years at 500 to 600 hours a year. A neglected one, by contrast, can suffer an unrepairable failure as early as 1,500 to 2,000 hours.

The cost of well-kept maintenance over 3 years is around €500 to €900 in parts — compared with the €5,000 to €15,000 a major failure (hydraulic pump, engine) can cost.

Maintenance schedule by interval

Before each use (daily)

  • Engine oil level: check with the dipstick, top up if needed
  • Hydraulic oil level: tank sight glass or dipstick
  • Fuel level: never run it dry (risk of air in the circuit)
  • Coolant: when cold, in the expansion tank
  • Track tension: a track that is too loose can come off
  • Visible hydraulic hoses: no leaks or abrasion
  • Safety devices: seat and arm lock working

Every 8 to 10 hours

  • Grease the arm joints (boom, dipper, bucket — EP2 lithium grease)
  • Grease the blade joints
  • Grease the slew ring (rotation bearing)

Every 50 hours

  • Check/clean the air filter
  • Check the alternator belt (tension, cracks)
  • Play in the pivot pins
  • Tightness of the track shoe bolts
  • Hydraulic filter clogging indicator

Every 100 hours

  • Drain the water/fuel separator
  • Check the valve clearance (Laidong, KOOP engines)
  • Check the hydraulic pressure

Every 200 to 250 hours

  • Full engine oil change (warm) + oil filter replacement
  • Replace the fuel filter and air filter
  • Clean the radiator with compressed air (reverse direction)

Every 500 hours

  • Replace the hydraulic filter (return + pilot)
  • Change the oil in the travel and slew reduction gears
  • Full inspection of the hydraulic hoses

Every 1,000 hours (or annually)

  • Full hydraulic oil change + tank flush
  • Replace the coolant
  • Check the welds and structure (arm, boom, chassis)
  • Overhaul the cylinders (rod seals)

Common problems and troubleshooting

Engine overheating

Stop the machine immediately if the temperature exceeds the warning threshold. Common causes: low coolant level, clogged radiator, broken/loose fan belt, faulty thermostat, or prolonged full-power use in hot weather (take breaks every 2 h in summer).

Hydraulic leaks

Oil stains, a dropping level or loss of power. Causes: a cylinder rod seal, a damaged hose (replace immediately — risk of high-pressure spray), a loosened/cracked fitting, or a pump seal.

Starting difficulties

Flat battery (the no. 1 cause, especially in winter), clogged fuel filter, air in the circuit (bleed it), faulty glow plugs, or oil that is too thick (switch to 5W-30/10W-30 below 0 °C).

Loss of digging power

Check, in order: hydraulic oil level, working pressure, filter condition. A pressure below 200 bar points to a pump or relief-valve problem.

Winterising and storage

For storage of more than 4 weeks:

  1. Full engine oil change (used oil is acidic and attacks the seals)
  2. Check the antifreeze (−25 °C protection recommended)
  3. Fill the fuel tank to 100% (prevents condensation)
  4. Grease all joints generously
  5. Retract the cylinder rods (anti-corrosion)
  6. Set the machine on blocks (relieves the tracks)
  7. Disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger
  8. Cover with a breathable tarpaulin

On restart: reconnect the battery, check the levels, let it idle for 5 minutes, then make slow arm movements to warm up the oil.

Track maintenance

Rubber tracks are wear parts (1,500 to 3,000 hours depending on the ground). A correctly tensioned track has 10 to 15 mm of sag at the lowest point. Adjust via the greasing valve (add to tighten, bleed to loosen). Wear indicators: lugs under 5 mm, deep longitudinal cracks, visible steel cords (urgent replacement). Cost of a pair: €300 to €800 depending on size.

Hydraulic circuit maintenance

Rigorous monitoring prevents 80% of hydraulic failures. The oil should stay clean and light amber: black = overheating/mixing, milky = water present. If you hear knocking (cavitation) or notice jerky movements, bleed the air by slowly working all movements at idle. A hose in good condition lasts 4 to 6 years: replace any swollen, cracked, abraded or leaking hose, without waiting for it to burst.

Replacing the filters

Engine oil filter: warm engine, full oil change, unscrew, fit a new lubricated seal, hand-tighten + 3/4 turn (never with a wrench), refill, check for leaks. Air filter: do not use compressed air inside the housing, respect the cartridge orientation. Hydraulic return filter: cold machine, depressurised circuit, lubricated seal, hand-tighten + 1/2 turn, check the level.

Maintenance cost over 3 years

For a mini excavator at 400 h/year (regular trade use):

OperationFrequency3-year cost
Engine oil change + oil filter250 h~€240
Air filter200 h~€80
Fuel filter250 h~€80
Hydraulic filter500 h~€130
Hydraulic oil1,000 h~€100
GreaseOngoing~€90
CoolantAnnual~€60
ContingenciesVariable~€150

Estimated total: €900 to €1,200 excl. VAT over 3 years in parts (excluding labour if you do the maintenance yourself), i.e. ~€25 to €35/month. CZN delivers every machine with a free starter kit (first-service filters + grease).
